Week 2 Positional Advantages: Eagles vs 49ers

The Philadelphia Eagles will play their first home game with fans since January of 2020 as they get set to face the San Francisco 49ers. This article will compare both teams at every position and see which one has the advantage in this matchup.

QB: Advantage Eagles

Jalen Hurts has a near perfect start to his 2021 season last week. Meanwhile, the 49ers appear to be jumping back and forth between Jimmy Garoppolo and their rookie QB Trey Lance. I'd give a slight advantage to Hurts in this one.

RB: Advantage Eagles

The Miles Sanders/Kenny Gainwell 1-2 punch was effective last week. The 49ers lost Raheem Mostert for the season and seem uncertain on how they'll divide snaps between Eli Mitchell, JaMychal Hasty, Trey Sermon, and Trenton Cannon. The Birds will have the advantage in this one.

WR: Advantage Eagles

Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk are a fine tandem, but the potential for DeVonta Smith and Jalen Reagor in this game is through the roof. Advantage Eagles.

TE: Push

George Kittle is a top-2 TE in the league, but the depth behind him is questionable. Zach Ertz + Dallas Goedert can certainly go toe-to-toe with Kittle, so this is a push in my eyes.

OL: Advantage Eagles

The 49ers o-line is certainly better than the Falcons, but the Eagles o-line is still healthy and there aren't many other lines in the league anyone would choose over them. Advantage Eagles.

Pash Rushers (DE/OLB): Advantage Eagles

The 49ers' pass rush is effective, but there's not much depth behind their starters. The Eagles have tons of depth at the position, so the Eagles have the advantage here.

LBs: Push

This might be the only time this season the Eagles aren't at a disadvantage here. Due to injuries, the 49ers have paper-thin depth behind Fred Warner. I see this one as a push.

DBs: Push

The Eagles will still be without Rodney McLeod, but the 49ers have also lost a starter in their defensive backfield (Jason Verrett). There might be a slight advantage for the Birds, but I'd say there's a push here.

STs: Push

Between Robbie Gould and Jake Elliott I see a push, and even though Arryn Siposs had a fantastic NFL debut last week, it's still too early to say he's an elite punter. So as of now I see it as a push.

Closing Comments

Due to injuries on the 49ers side and the depth in the Eagles' trenches, the Birds should have the advantage in this game. Now they just need to prove it out on the field.
