Mike Groh Hints At Mike Wallace Return

Updated: Apr 15, 2019

Despite a solid showing on Thursday night, the play of the Eagles’ wide receivers has left something to be desired this season.

Injuries have played a role as Alshon Jeffery missed time to start the season, Mack Hollins hasn’t been able to get on the field, and Mike Wallace went down with an injury in Week 2. Jeffery has provided a spark since returning, and Nelson Agholor has stepped up admirably, but wide receiver remains a position of concern. Early this week we got some hope that Wallace could be able to return this season, as offensive coordinator Mike Groh updated Wallace’s status.

At a press conference, Groh told reporters that Wallace is “progressing” and that “we’ll get a chance to get him back here this season.” This is welcome news for a unit that has been decimated by injuries.

Wallace was brought on to replace Torrey Smith and provide the Eagles with a deep threat that can stretch the field. While Wallace’s production had been lacking throughout the preseason and in the regular season prior to his injury, a stretch-the-filed receiver has become incredibly important in today’s NFL. With Wallace providing that and some much-needed depth, his return would be a boost for the offense.

With injuries not only to the wide receivers but also the running backs and the secondary, there has been no shortage of rumors surrounding the Eagles looking to make a move through a trade/trades. If they are confident Wallace can return to the field, they could look to spend resources elsewhere as they try to defend their Super Bowl title.
