After just four years in the league, it appears 2014 first-round pick Marcus Smith could be hanging up his boots for good.
The Seattle Seahawks released Smith on Friday and he is reportedly weighing up retirement, per Ian Rapoport.
Smith was drafted by Philadelphia with the 26th overall pick in the 2014 draft. Graded a late 2nd-3rd round prospect by many analysts at the time, many Eagles' fans were perplexed by the selection. Those suspicions proved to be right, as Smith struggled mightily in his rookie season, recording zeroes across the stat sheet in all categories. Smith never started a game for Philadelphia in his three years with the team, delivering only 4 sacks and 16 tackles along the way.
The 2014 draft was general manager Howie Roseman's final year in charge before Chip Kelly was named head of football operations, giving him control of the front office. Now back from his banishment, Howie has since took responsibility for the decision.
Despite this bust of Danny Watkins-esque proportions, I don't think there is any doubt that the 2017 NFL Executive of the Year has since made up for the mistake, and then some.
Smith was waived by the Eagles after the 2016 season and was soon signed by Seattle, where he recorded 2.5 sacks and 15 tackles in 14 games. After re-signing with the team this off-season, Smith had the opportunity to gain snaps within a weakened Seahawks' defensive unit in flux. After an uninspiring training camp, he will not, and may not for a team again.
