Remember safety Walter Thurmond? It’s not that far of a throwback. In 2010, the former Oregon Duck was drafted in the 4th round as a cornerback by the Seattle Seahawks. As a member of the “Legion of Boom”, he won a Super Bowl with the team in 2014.
After that Super Bowl, Thurmond had a forgettable stint with the NY Giants due to his season being derailed by a torn pectoral in Week 2.
Largely viewed as “low risk-high reward” move, the Eagles signed him to a one year deal in the 2015 offseason and converted him to safety. Saying it turned out to be a high reward would be an understatement.
Thurmond went on to have his best statistical season ever, recording 71 tackles, 3 INTs, a pair of sacks, pair of forced fumbles, and a safety. The Eagles looked like they had a gem and attempted to resign Thurmond, but even though he had plenty of suitors, he actually decided to retire at the ripe age of 28. Could you just imagine having that kind of production in the secondary right now? Especially with the injury to Rodney McLeod, it would certainly be a welcome sight.

Plenty left for interpretation from just two little sentences. Thurman may have just been (probably) making a joke. Now at 31 years old and 3 years removed from playing professional football, it’s also fair to question if he would be able to get anywhere close to that type of form if he were to make a comeback. Still though, given the glaring need for safety help, I wouldn’t hold it against Howie if he wanted to kick the tires on Thurmond if he was in fact being serious.
