State of the NFC East: Week 15

The Philadelphia Eagles stepped up in a big way Sunday night, earning a huge road win over the Rams and keeping their playoff hopes alive in the process. While their chances of winning the NFC East remain slim, the Cowboys lost keeping the possibility alive. Let’s dig into the state of the division with two games left in the regular season.

Cowboys (8-6)

Dallas suffered a somewhat surprising shutout loss to the Colts, putting off their division championship celebration for at least a week. Still, because the Eagles came up short in both games against Dallas this season, they will need to win out while the Cowboys lose out to claim the NFC East crown. This week we’ll be pulling for Tampa Bay to pull off the upset of Dallas.

Eagles (7-7)

The Birds’ win Sunday night was great, but it’s hard to wonder if it’s too little too late and to lament the plethora of silly losses the Eagles piled up throughout the season. Regardless, the door to the division title remains ever-so-slightly cracked and the Eagles are a slip-up from the Vikings away from moving into a Wild Card spot. It seems unlikely that Dallas will lose to both Tampa Bay and the Giants, but a Vikings loss to either the Lions or the Bears, the latter which will likely have a chance to grab a first round bye in Week 17, is plausible. Philly will try to keep its playoff hopes alive when it hosts the Texans on Sunday.

Redskins (7-7)

Washington kept its mathematical playoff hopes alive by beating the Jags last week but are in a tough spot in the tiebreakers. The Redskins need even more help than the Eagles do, and it’s tough to envision enough things going their way to get into the playoffs. They’ll try to stay in the mix when they travel to Tennessee this weekend.

Giants (5-9)

The Giants joined the Cowboys in the shutout club last week, losing to the Titans 17-0. They’re playing the draft pick game right now, and winning four of their last six after a 1-7 start has likely pushed them out of the top 5.
