Earlier in the week at a press conference, Howie Roseman confirmed that the Eagles would not use the franchise tag on Nick Foles. Foles will be allowed to pick his next destination, and will likely have a handful of teams bidding for his services.
Nate Sudfeld has been on the Eagles since 2017, and has been third in line on the QB depth chart since that time. With Foles' departure, Sudfeld was destined to become Carson Wentz's backup for the 2019 season, but according to Mike Kaye of NJ.com, Sudfeld might be stuck in the same position this year. Kaye states that:
"the team will pursue veteran quarterbacks in free agency later this month"
Even though the team might be pursuing a veteran QB in Free Agency, it sounds like Sudfeld will get a chance to prove himself in Training Camp and the pre-season. At the NFL Combine on Wednesday, Howie Roseman said:
“We have a lot of confidence in Nate...he’s had an incredible opportunity to learn from two of the best quarterbacks in the national football league and this is a big opportunity for him and a big year for him.”
So if Sudfeld doesn't do well in the summer, the Eagles want to have another QB in place that they trust to win some games if Carson Wentz were to go down with an injury once again.
Top Free Agent QBs include:
Teddy Bridgewater
Josh McCown
Tyrod Taylor
Ryan Fitzpatrick
Robert Griffin III
With the Eagles strapped for cap space in 2019, it's not likely they'd land a QB wanting a healthy contract. They need a QB willing to come here one season for cheap, with hopes that they get on the field and perform well enough to earn a bigger contract in 2020. I personally think RGIII is the best one to fit that bill, but we just have to wait and see who Howie Roseman believes will be the best fit for the Eagles.
