It appears key special teams contributor and fan favorite Chris Maragos will be departing Philadelphia a year earlier than expected.
On Tuesday, Maragos agreed to a restructured contract that will pay him $1.75 million in 2018 and make him a free agent in 2019. The new contract effectively eliminates the $2.25 million he would have been due in 2019 per the original 3 year deal he signed in 2017.
Maragos tore his ACL and PCL in week 6 last year. He is due to start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list that will keep him on the sideline for at least the first 6 weeks of the upcoming regular season.
The move by the team is the latest in a string of efforts by GM Howie Roseman to create cap space for the 2019 season. Even by cutting ties with Nick Foles and his $20 Million 2019 hit, the Eagles are still expected to be over the cap by $20 million going into next offseason. Taking then into account players coming off contract such as Brandon Graham, Jordan Hicks, Jay Ajayi and Ronald Darby, Howie has got some work to do.
And this is all before franchise quarterback Carson Wentz's mega-deal which will be due in 2020.
