Jay Ajayi Set to Have a "Notable" Role on Sunday
Updated: Nov 24, 2019
When Jay Ajayi rejoined the Eagles, few could have predicted that he would be filling in for Darren Sproles, as well as Jordan Howard. Though, the timing could not have been better for a reunion between the two. The 26 year old Brit is expected to make his return this Sunday against the Seahawks, and in a major way.
The Eagles and Ajayi have a mutually beneficial relationship. Coming off of a knee injury which sidelined him nearly 14 months ago, Ajayi needed an opportunity. Knowing what he was capable of, the Eagles provided him with such an opportunity, and put a “first right of refusal” clause in his contract, per Ian Rapaport. Should Ajayi perform well during the remainder of the season, the Eagles will have an opportunity to match any incoming offers during the 2020 offseason.
So what’ve we got to lose by turning the Jay-Train loose this week? If he performs well, the team will have the opportunity to retain him if the price is right.
With the Eagles having a “running back by committee” mentality, and Ajayi’s knowledge of the playbook, it’s almost certain that he will receive a substantial amount of carries in support of Miles Sanders. Boston Scott also had trouble hanging onto the football last week. I’d imagine Scott will remain our return man on special teams, but the Ajayi addition may affect the amount of carries he will receive out of the backfield.
At 5-5 and with multiple injuries, the Eagles need someone that is going to step up, and take advantage of the opportunity provided to them. Much of the team has struggled in that endeavor this season. Keep an eye out for #28 to try to change that narrative this weekend.
