Eagles Part Ways With L.J. Fort

With their cornerbacks decimated, today the Eagles decided to sign Orlando Scandrick. With that addition though the Eagles needed to release someone from the 53-man roster -- that someone ended up being linebacker L.J. Fort.

Fort was signed this offseason to a multi-year deal and he was expected to be a contributor both on special teams and on defense. He didn't see a single snap on defense through four games but had the third most special teams snaps on the team (75).

This move might have been made with the 2020 draft in mind. According to Philly Voice (using OverTheCap's compensatory pick formula), the Eagles will now be gaining a 4th-round pick in next year's draft with Fort now off the list.

Fort's contract now off the books uncrosses Golden Tate's name off the list, which means for now the Eagles will have an extra 3rd and 4th-round pick in 2020. If the team decides to release Andrew Sendejo before Week 10, then that move will also allow the Eagles to gain one more 4th-rounder.

Maybe these moves with the 2020 draft in mind might be Howie Roseman getting ready to trade picks for a star cornerback? The Jaguars want multiple 1st-round picks for Jalen Ramsey, and maybe Roseman wants to add a few more draft picks this way so he feels better when trading away some higher picks. We'll just have to wait and see Roseman's plans unfold.
