This offseason, the Eagles only brought in a couple of free agents who were believed to be possible key contributors to the team. One of them that the front office was extremely excited about bringing in was LB Corey Nelson. Nelson signed a one year, $2.25 million deal to try and win a starting linebacker spot here in Philadelphia. Fans in Denver were upset to see him go, so it was easy for fans in Philly to start believing that they got a great player on a cheap deal. But so far that hasn't been the case.
Nelson has been somewhat of a disappointment so far through training camp and the preseason. So much so, that he might not even make the 53-man roster, let alone become the starting linebacker for the team.
According to phillyvoice.com's Jimmy Kempski, the Eagles might be better off releasing Nelson as opposed to keeping him around as a back-up, because the team might be able to preserve a 6th round draft pick compensation if he isn't kept on the team.
Kempski says "Nelson hasn't done much this camp, and has been thoroughly outplayed by Nate Gerry and Kamu Grugier-Hill in the competition for the third linebacker spot. I suspect the Eagles will indeed view the sixth round comp pick (and $1 million saved, by the way) as more valuable than Nelson."
