In the 2018 season there hasn't really been many bright spots on the Eagles roster. One of the lone standouts has been the tight end position, where Zach Ertz has been having basically one of the best season by a tight end in NFL history. Dallas Goedert has also lived up to the hype in his limited role in the Eagles offense so far.
To start the season, the Eagles had Josh Perkins as the 3rd tight end who played limited snaps. Perkins is more of a receiving-type tight end, and not particularly a good blocking-type tight end.
The Eagles decided to make a move today to try to improve their depth at the position.
Rodgers was brought in this season on a one-year deal expected to be extra depth for Ertz (before the team even drafted Goedert). Rodgers ended up injuring his knee in the preseason, and had to start the year on Injured Reserve. The team decided to use one of their two IR return-designations on Rodgers to come back and try to help turn this season around. He will end up being an improvement from Perkins, but how much of an impact he will make remains to be seen.
The Eagles now have just one more IR return-designation to use, and it will likely be for Mack Hollins, unless Mike Wallace or Rodney McLeod end up becoming healthy sooner than expected.
