The Eagles only had three running backs on their roster after initial cuts. With Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, and Kenneth Gainwell the Birds didn't have the powerful north/south runner they wanted. They could have brought back Jordan Howard, but instead decided to claim Trey Sermon (6'0, 215lbs) off of waivers.
Sermon was a third-round pick of the 49ers in 2021. In an injury-riddled year, he produced just 167 rushing yards on 41 rushes and one touchdown.
It's worth the chance since there isn't really much risk involved for the Eagles. If he doesn't pan out the team can release him quickly and maybe reunite with Jordan Howard at some point later in the season if the team still wants a heavy and powerful rusher.
