A long, long time ago the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers had to unite due to the loss of players shipped off to World War II. The combination team helped the Eagles secure their first winning season (5-4-1) in their decade-long history and helped shift the team towards its winning ways in the later part of the 1940s.
Now with both teams in their 89th NFL season and plenty of talented/legendary players over the years, we wanted to take a look at what a super Steagles team would look like. Here's a look at the best combined roster of Steelers and Eagles greats:
QB Terry Bradshaw -- the 4x Super Bowl winner (2x SB MVP) just knows how to win
QB Donovan McNabb -- McNabb never won the big one but never really had talented receivers around him to get over the hump. With this roster he'd be good enough to win a Super Bowl
QB Norm Van Brocklin -- Considered one of the best QBs of his era and was the only QB able to beat Vince Lombardi's Packers in the playoffs
RB Franco Harris -- a 4x Super Bowl winner and Hall of Famer would be the bell-cow
RB Jerome Bettis -- Every team needs a power RB, and he was one of the best ever
RB LeSean McCoy -- the shifty RB needed to make home run plays for this team
RB Brian Westbrook -- can make big plays on the ground and can catch balls better than most receivers
WR Harold Carmichael -- the best WR in Eagles history would be a dangerous redzone option for this team
WR Mike Quick -- well-rounded receiver would make life easy on the QBs
WR John Stallworth -- Pressure doesn't phase him, as hr scored touchdowns in eight straight playoff games at one point, an NFL record
WR Lynn Swann -- HOFer that can do anything and everything to move the chains
WR Tommy McDonald -- the grittiest receiver of this bunch would go to the dirty areas of the field to make a big play
TE Zach Ertz -- Future Eagles HOFer that can move the chains
TE Heath Miller -- 2x Super Bowl Champion, 2x Pro Bowler
TE Pete Pihos -- HOFer and legendary tough guy/war hero; one of the best pass catchers of the 1940s
TE Pete Retzlaff -- NFL Champion, 2x All-Pro, Eagles Hall of Famer
LT Jason Peters -- the bodyguard and future HOFer would make sure nobody touches the QBs on this team
LT Tra Thomas -- Eagles HOFer that could fill in when needed without any falloff
LG Alan Faneca -- HOFer and member of the 2000s all-decade team
LG Wade Key -- underrated tough lineman; member of Eagles 75th anniversary team
C Jason Kelce -- future HOFer that will secure the middle of the line
C Mike Webster -- HOFer, 4x Super Bowl champion, member of two all-decades team and doesn't need anything more said
RG Shawn Andrews -- All-Pro and member of Eagles 75th anniversary team
RG David DeCastro -- 2x All-Pro, 6x Pro Bowler
RT Lane Johnson -- the best RT of this generation doesn't get the respect he deserves nationally, but would be
RT Tunch Ilkin -- 2x Pro Bowler and Steelers HOFer
DE Reggie White -- the minister of defense would rip through other team's o-lines with ease
DE Aaron Smith -- 2x Super Bowl champion
DE James Harrison -- 2x Super Bowl champion, 2x All-Pro
DE L.C. Greenwood -- 4x Super Bowl champion, 2x All-Pro and is somehow underrated since he has yet to be elected to the Hall of Fame would wreck havoc thanks to Reggie White on the other side.
DT Joe Greene -- likely the greatest DT of all-time would have been ever better with all this talent around him
DT Jerome Brown -- Brown flourish with talent around him in the 1990s and would be even better with this lineup around him
DT Fletcher Cox -- teamed up with JB he'd have an easy time bringing pressure up front
DT Ernie Stautner -- HOFer and 2x Super Bowl champion; all 4 DTs on this squad would be dangerous for opposing o-lines
ILB Jack Lambert -- the greatest LB of his era would be the signal caller for this defense
ILB Chuck Bednarik -- the last of the 60 minute men could even play center for this team, but for now would rattled opposing running backs and tight ends
ILB Bill Bergey -- the heart of the 1970s Eagles would provide great depth on this roster
OLB Jack Ham -- greatest OLB of his era; can get sacks or cover route-runners
OLB Greg Lloyd -- 3x All-Pro, 5x Pro Bowler, Steelers HOFer
CB Donnie Shell -- 4x Super Bowl champion, HOF, 51 career interceptions CB Jack Butler -- one of the best cornerbacks of the 1950s; had 52 career interceptions
CB Mel Blount -- 4x Super Bowl champion, HOFer was a ballhawk with 57 career interceptions
CB Tom Brookshier -- NFL Champion, 2x Pro Bowler, Eagles HOFer, 20 career interception
CB Troy Vincent -- Eagles HOFer, All-Pro corner with 47 career interceptions
CB Eric Allen -- 34 interceptions is tied for most in Eagles history
CB/S Rod Woodson -- 6x All-Pro and Super Bowl champion could play both cornerback and safety in this defense
S Brian Dawkins -- HOFer, Weapon X would be the heart of this defense and form a nasty tandem with Troy
S Troy Polamalu -- HOFer, 2x Super Bowl champion and member of the 2000s all-decade team
S Carnell Lake -- All-Pro, Steelers HOFer, 1990s All-Decade team
S Mike Wagner -- 4x Super Bowl champion, Steelers HOFer
K David Akers -- clutch kicker that can come through if ever needed
P Bobby Walden -- can pin teams deep on their side of the field, but would rarely be needed on this team
LS Jon Dorenbos -- one of the best long snappers in NFL history and would be a great locker room guy with his magic side act
